FAQs

Boilers

  • Can you repair my boiler?

No matter what type of boiler you own, our team of gas engineers will quickly diagnose and repair your boiler if you are having an issue. Regardless of the brand of boiler you own, we will use quality parts and materials to fix the issue if we can. If your boiler is beyond repair, the engineer will discuss your options and help you find a solution that works for you.

  • Can you arrange a boiler installation?

As Gas Safe registered engineers, we can install boilers and all gas appliances. We will also fit all-electric appliances along with fire surrounds, central heating radiators and any other gas or electric appliance.

  • Why do I need to get my boiler serviced?

It is imperative that you get your boiler and gas appliances serviced regularly; this will ensure that they are working as efficiently and safely as possible. An annual boiler service will increase the chance of detecting minor faults before they become a full-blown and costly boiler problem.

  • What is a power flush?

A power flush is a procedure where a low pressure but high water flow pump is connected to your central heating system and pumps water through at a high rate. With a combination of chemicals, this will break up and dislodge any sludge, limescale or other materials that can build up. The process will leave your system working at 100% efficiency.

  • Do I need a power flush?

If your central heating system has not been performing well, for example, your radiators are taking a long time to warm up, or you are noticing that they have cold spots on them, your system might benefit from a power flush. Contact TAP Co. to discuss your system, and we will advise on the best solution.

  • Will a power flush save me money on my energy bills?

Blockages, cold spots and bad water flow can all cause your central heating to take longer to warm up, which means it has to work harder to keep your home warm and at a constant temperature. This means your heating will consume more fuel and so will cost more money to maintain. A power flush on your heating system will make it much more efficient, and so require less energy and fuel to keep your home warm.

  • Should I install a magnetic filter on my system?

We do recommend a magnetic filter and will always fit one if we install a new boiler. This is a small magnetic unit that traps any debris, dirt and sludge that can build up before it does any damage to your boiler and controls. The filter is cleaned at your annual boiler service.

  • What should I be aware of when installing a bathroom or kitchen?

Many older and large properties have been that have converted into homes were not intended to be self-contained units, and so have had kitchens and bathrooms added at a later time. This can often mean that space and layout is a little awkward and unsuitable for a modern lifestyle. Often, an extension to the bathroom may be needed to achieve the desired look and feel. TAP Co. can help you here; we will work with you to make the space you have available work for you and come up with a design to achieve your dream bathroom or kitchen.

  • Do I need to waterproof the whole bathroom floor or just the shower area?

Waterproofing is definitely needed where there's a water outlet, such as the shower area, bath, taps and drains. You will need to waterproof your shower recess to a height of at least 1800mm. How far you extend the waterproofing on the floor depends on whether you are using a pre-moulded base, if the shower recess is enclosed and what your floor is made of.

  • How should I heat my bathroom?

Underfloor heating is a great way to heat your bathroom. Water heated or electrically-heated tubing is installed under your bathroom floor, which provides heat from the ground up.

A heated towel rail is another option to heat your bathroom that is relatively inexpensive.

  • Do I need an extractor fan to get rid of the steam?

We always recommend that you have an extractor fan installed because it removes steam, moisture and odours, and most significantly, it prevents the growth of mould. You should make sure the air is vented to the outside of the house and not to an attic where moisture can cause damage to woodwork.

A burst pipe emergency can cause a lot of damage to your property's structure and electrical wiring. If you discover a burst pipe, you should take the following steps:

    1. Turn off the main stop tap - these are located where the service pipe enters your home, which is often under the kitchen sink.

    2. If you can drain the system - turn on all your cold taps.

    3. Switch off all your heating systems. Once water heating has been turned off, turn on all the hot taps, which will help drain the system.

    4. Turn off all the electrics, if water has leaked near your electrics you should switch off the mains immediately.

  • How do I prevent frozen and burst pipes?

There are a number of prevention measures to help avoid burst, leaking and frozen pipes. We recommend the following care tips (especially in winter):

    • Make sure your loft is well insulated - and the sides of your water tank.

    • Make sure your pipes are well insulated – A good tip is to open the loft trap door when it is cold to let heat in.

    • If you have dripping taps replace the washer- this is because if they freeze, it can block the pipe.

    • Make yourself aware where the main stop tap is located. Check that you can turn it off in an emergency, especially in very cold weather on a regular basis.

    • Put your central heating on low setting or set it to come on a more than once a day, especially if you are going to be away from the property for a length of time.

  • When should I bleed a radiator?

You can tell when your radiator needs bleeding if the top section remains a lot cooler than the bottom. In some severe cases, the whole radiator will stay cold when the heating system is turned on. This happens when trapped air shifts the hot water that usually heats the radiator.

This trapped air will be released when you bleed your radiator. The hot water will be able to flow freely through the radiator once the air is released.

If you're unsure why your radiators aren't heating, please contact TAP Co, and we will come out and diagnose the problem, contact: enquires@tapcompany.co.uk
